Kellee Santiago Announces Departure from thatgamecompany

Looks like Journey, the newest title from PSN developer thatgamecompany, may have been more aprospos of a title than anyone could have imagined.

A recent tweet from thatgamecompany co-founder Kellee Santiago has revealed that she will be leaving the comapny, but no further plans for her future have been announced.

The tweet, seen above, sent out this morning, thanks the community for their support in her decision.

A recent blog post from thatgamecompany, as well as a recent interview with Gamasutra, discusses not only Santiago's departure, but rumors of future announcements of her colleagues who may follow suit.

As the studio begins work on a new game, co-founder and president Kellee Santiago departs. Gamasutra sources say that other key staff departures may be forthcoming as well. Santiago declined to confirm or to speak to her colleagues’ plans, but suggested future announcements are ‘likely.’ As for her own departure, it’s entirely amicable, Santiago tells us, explaining that it’s simply time to seek new challenges.

Santiago then spoke to her decision for leaving:

…founding a company whose explicit goal was to do new types of game development really allowed me to be able to try out new processes for game development, to try out new ideas…So much of my work at Thatgamecompany was really supporting Jenova’s visions for the types of games he wanted to make, and I felt like I have done everything I needed to do there, and that he’s in a great place now to go on and continue with some of the other people at Thatgamecompany, to take that to a whole new heights.

With the recent departure of another figurehead, Lionhead Studio's Peter Molyneux–of Fable fame–March seems to have become quite the month for game developer shifting.

We recently had the opportunity to interview Kellee during her time at The Art of Video Games exhibit in Washington, D.C. At the time she did not speak to any plans to leave thatgamecomapny, but you can view the interview below.

The staff at Pixel Perfect wishes Kellee the best of luck, wherever this new Journey may take her! Stay tuned to Pixel Perfect for any updates as they come in.

Who knows what the reasons are, but from a creative standpoint, I can certainly understand it.  It's the video game version of musicians leaving a band to go solo or join another band.   Best of luck to her, and looking forward to seeing where she ends up!
